Evaluation.

EVALUATION

For my media coursework I produced a music magazine which was for the Hip Hop genre.
My music magazine ‘Demand’ uses forms and conventions of the hip hop magazine named ‘Hip Hop’ such as: ‘Demand’ follows the conventions of the ‘Hip Hop’ magazine by using the same font colours – black, white and red, which are quite dominant colours. The font colours are also used throughout the whole of my magazine. On the my cover page of my magazine, the strap lines are also aliened to the sides and stacked neatly with the artists with the shortest name making it’s way to the artist with the longest name. I got this idea of the strap line layout from the magazine ‘Hip Hop’ which uses this convention. I kept the strap lines away from the middle of the page and more towards the sides of it so the audience can have more of a clear view of the main image, and so that the writing was not blocking it, also it shows the image is very important and big
The masthead on my magazine is behind my main image’s head – this shows that the magazine is well known to the public eye so it’s not that important for the masthead to be shown fully to the audience. The barcode is also placed towards the bottom of the page in the bottom right hand corner as it’s not that important to the reader so placing it away in the corner shows that there’s no importance to it.
The contents page of my magazine also follows the forms and conventions of ‘Hip Hop’ magazine as the main image is blown up to cover the whole of the page and the writing is aliened to one side so again, it doesn’t cover the main image. It also follows the conventions of the font usage as I have used the font ‘Ariel’ and have made the headlines of the important storylines stand out which will attract the audiences eye more closely.
The type of images that I have used for my magazine say a lot about what the magazine will be about. For example; for my front cover I used a long shot where we can see the artist standing and posing which shows that the magazine is introducing a new artist. The contents page has an image of the artist quite close to the camera with a medium shot – this shows that the magazine is getting closer to reveal more about the new upcoming artist. Finally, on the double page spread there’s an image on the left hand side of the page which is a long shot image which shows what the artist is wearing (A suit) which shows his more sophisticated even though he’s in the Hip Hop genre of music. On the right and side of the page there’s an up close image of his face which shows that the magazine got close and personal with him during the interview.
My media product presents teenagers and young adults who enjoy the Hip Hop genre of music. My magazine is aimed towards the teenagers who enjoy listening to Hip Hop and want to keep up with the latest gossip and new songs. As it’s aimed towards teenagers, there’s not much writing in there – it’s short and straight to the point, this is because teenagers don’t tend to read pages and pages of articles so it’s unique as there’s not so much writing.
The media institution that may distribute my media product would be distributors such as the ones who distribute the magazine ‘Hip Hop’ or ‘The Source’ as they are also Hip Hop genre music magazines and they also make magazines for the younger audience who enjoy getting informed about the
Hip Hop culture regularly. Another institution would be ‘Bauer publishing’ this is because they also cater magazines for teenagers above the age 16 years.
The target audience for my media product would be mainly boys who are above the age of 16years and have a passion for hip hop music. Also it’s targeted towards people who live mainly in the urban areas – this is because it’s easier for them to buy a copy of the magazine at their local shop whereas if they lived in the rural areas it would be hard for them.
I attracted my audience by using masculine colours – black, white and red – and having other well known hip hop artists on the front cover in the strap lines – this would help identify the audience to what sort of music magazine genre it is. Another way I attracted my audience was throughout the font that I have used, I made some statements bold which attracts the audiences eye and gets them more interested in the article.
During the process of constructing my magazine, I learnt that making magazines is done best if you do it in either ‘Photoshop’ or ‘Publisher’. This is due to you can edit the images in anyway you like, you can add more stuff to the image or you can draw boxes over it. However, making a magazine on ‘Photoshop’ or ‘publisher’ everything that you want on the front cover should be carefully planned and must assure that you follow through the plan as if you make a mistake, it could mess everything up. I didn’t use much of the effects on ‘Photoshop’ as I thought less is more and it looks more real.
Looking back at my preliminary task, I have learnt that having less on the page is more. You should never have too many things on the page as it may look a bit too busy and unorganised. I’ve also learnt that the way the person stands/looks in the images is very important as that also sends out a message to the audiences.

What I've done so far..

Since I have started my media magazine project I have been on task with everything.
The schedule that I planned out; I've been following through and I'm on top of what I need to do and when to do it by.
I have completed my front cover page which took me around 2days to complete, the main problem I had doing that was getting my Masthead behind my image's head. I finally done it in Photoshop which took me a while to get hang of.
I've also completed my contents page. The image that I've used there is to do with what the magazine's months issue is to do with. (The exclusive Interview about Robin Paul)
Right now, I'm doing my double page spread. One of my pages in my double page is going to be just an image of my artist that I'm talking about. The other page will have my text on there and another image of my artist above the text.

My work so far..

This is my front cover for my magazine, majority of it is still done, however I think that it's quite empty at the bottom left of the page so I'm two minds whether I should add anything to it or shall I just leave it empty..

This is my contents page which I just done in todays lesson, I think it is quite well done as it follows majority of a HipHop magazine layout. The main image which I have used as the background is an image which is based around the main topic of this months issue - "the exclusive interview with Robin Paul."

My Front Page.. (So far)

This is the start of my front page..
My magazine is called 'Demand' and I had to make the title of my magazine go behind my images head. To do this, I had to use Photoshop.
I had to lasso my images head and copy it and paste it in a new layer which allowed me to position the text behind his head ..
Now I can carry on designing my front cover =D
